I assume that we all have had a phase in our lives where we buy airport fragrances and consider them the best. Or when we go online and buy a discounted fragrance from one of the popular brands like Versace, Gucci, Hugo Boss, and so on. There is nothing bad if you still do it. Really, we all have our favorites, and we all have our tastes. But it is worth knowing that you can do better. It is worth knowing that there is an independent perfumer in Paris that does things his own way. Furthermore, in my humble opinion, he does it brilliantly. This maker of kings, this wizard of smells is Pierre Guillaume.
My first encounter with the perfumes by Pierre Guillaume came a couple of years ago. I was in the market for a new fragrance, and I knew that in Latvia there is this place called “Spots” that sells select perfumes not found anywhere else. I am quite sure it is the only place in Latvia where you can go, try and choose a perfume by Pierre Guillaume. Thus I went to their shop, tried some of Pierre’s fragrances, and chose my first one. It was Indian Wood. And I fell in love. I am not exaggerating or pulling your tail, I genuinely fell in love with not only the place where this perfume is sold but also with Pierre Guillaume.
Worth mentioning that the lady who sells Pierre Guillaume’s perfumes is exceptional. She perfectly knows her way around the different aromas put up for sale. Just by telling her what you like and what nuances you prefer in your fragrance, she is going to find something new you might like. A perfect combo, namely, this lady and Pierre Guillaume.
Luckily, I have a wonderful woman as well. And even though when we met she was not that into fragrances. I was able to persuade her to try my newfound love, Pierre Guillaume. She likes him. She really does. Currently, she has L’Eau de Circe, she used to have Mad About You, and she likes to wear my Jangala as well. I seriously could not ask for a better fragrance partner.
Back to the present. My most recent encounter with Pierre. Sadly, not the man, the myth, the legend in the flesh, but a purchase. I was running low on my 50ml Jangala, thus I decided to make an online purchase from the Pierre Guillaume store. I knew I wanted Jangala again but this time 100ml so it lasts much longer. But I was also open to trying something else. I went for Liqueur Charnelle. Do I really need to say how much I like them both? I will do as much as to say that the perfumes of Pierre Guillaume are like an aphrodisiac. Enough said.
What surprised me the most was not the contents of my order, but the way it was shipped. No, nothing got broken. Everything arrived, even my individually selected samples. What I did not expect was a handwritten note in the Pierre Guillaume catalog. Yes, it was not written by Mr. Pierre, but nevertheless. The sheer gesture of taking your time and writing in beautiful handwriting a note on the contents of my order. These little things are what make a purchase from Pierre Guillaume special. It is next-level customer service. Worth every penny.
I hope to visit Paris sometime soon. Furthermore, I hope to visit a boutique by Pierre Guillaume and try new fragrances. And buy something as well, of course.
