Movie Review – Oppenheimer

olaaf, 23/07/202323/07/2023

I am not ashamed to say that I am a Christopher Nolan fan. In fact, you would find very few people who would actually be ashamed to say that they’re Nolan fans.

Christopher Nolan is a British-American filmmaker widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most talented and influential directors. He was born on July 30, 1970, in London, England. Nolan is known for his distinctive storytelling style, complex narratives, and visually stunning films.

Some of Christopher Nolan’s most notable films include:

  1. Memento (2000) – A psychological thriller about a man suffering from short-term memory loss trying to find his wife’s killer.
  2. The Prestige (2006) – Two stage magicians engage in competitive one-upmanship to create the ultimate trick.
  3. The Dark Knight Trilogy:
    • a. Batman Begins (2005)
    • b. The Dark Knight (2008)
    • c. The Dark Knight Rises (2012) These films revitalized the Batman franchise, with Christian Bale portraying Bruce Wayne/Batman and Heath Ledger delivering an iconic performance as the Joker in “The Dark Knight.”
  4. Inception (2010) – A mind-bending science fiction film about a group of thieves who enter people’s dreams to steal their secrets.
  5. Interstellar (2014) – A sci-fi epic exploring space travel, time dilation, and the survival of humanity in a dying Earth.
  6. Dunkirk (2017) – A war film based on the evacuation of British and Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk during World War II.
  7. Tenet (2020) – Another mind-bending sci-fi film involving time inversion and espionage.

Christopher Nolan’s films often explore complex themes, human psychology, and the nature of reality. He is known for using practical effects and avoiding excessive computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create a more immersive cinematic experience.

Throughout his career, Nolan has received critical acclaim and commercial success, earning numerous awards and nominations. He has been nominated for several Academy Awards and has won multiple BAFTA Awards and other accolades for his work as a director, writer, and producer.

I have seen all of Christopher Nolan’s movies listed above. Some on the big screen (Tenet, Dunkirk, The Dark Knight Rises), some only a couple of years after their release (Memento, The Prestige, Inception), one even multiple times in the cinema (The Dark Knight Rises 3x), and most of them countless times on Netflix. I enjoy Nolan’s storytelling, his play with the concept of time and reality, his visual style, and the use of music as a way to influence and/or highlight a scene or a character.

On 21st July 2023, I saw on IMAX his latest cinematic accomplishment. His new movie Oppenheimer.

J. Robert Oppenheimer, whose full name was Julius Robert Oppenheimer, was an American physicist and one of the key figures in developing the atomic bomb during World War II. He was born on April 22, 1904, in New York City, United States, and passed away on February 18, 1967.

Oppenheimer is often referred to as the “father of the atomic bomb” due to his leadership and scientific contributions to the Manhattan Project. This was a top-secret research and development project the United States undertook during World War II to create the first nuclear weapons.

This movie is everything you would expect from Nolan. Visually striking, magnificently shot, superb editing, outstanding music that facilitates and enhances a scene. Is it the best movie made by Nolan? To me The Dark Knight is still his best work, with Dunkirk coming second followed by Tenet, and only then Oppenheimer. It cost 100 million dollars to make, it has a three-hour run-time, the cast has some of the biggest names currently in Hollywood and Nolan made this biopic almost entirely without CGI but by using practical effects. Even the Trinity test was recreated practically.

IMAX screen

The Trinity test was the code name for the first detonation of a nuclear weapon and was a part of the Manhattan Project, the research and development program undertaken by the United States during World War II to create the atomic bomb. The test took place on July 16, 1945, in the Jornada del Muerto desert, near Alamogordo, New Mexico.

What more is there to say? It is a biopic. It is a Nolan movie. It is a movie about one of the most influential humans in history, and it has zero action scenes, namely, not a single punch was landed. Please see this movie on the biggest screen you can find. You will feel angry, happy, sad, perplexed, and satisfied. All of that during this one cinematic experience. Furthermore, our screening was almost sold out, and we sat on the far-left side which initially seemed slightly troubling. Luckily, an IMAX screen is so large that you do not necessarily have to always sit in the middle section. Sitting more on the left or more on the right will not diminish your experience. Trust me.

Imagine if Nolan directed a Bond movie with full control of the production. It would mean to the Bond franchise what The Dark Knight meant to Batman. Let’s dream of it becoming a reality.

Kind regards,

Olaaf
