If you want to know why Belgium is beautiful travel to Dinant.
If you want to touch and feel history then also travel to Dinant.

If you want to sit on the shores of river Meuse, drink delicious Belgian beer and eat a selection of meats and cheese then my advice is to travel to the wonderful medieval city of Dinant.
Unlike in Namur I did not buy a new fragrance from Pierre Guillaume. Unlike in Luxembourg I did not buy a new leather item. Unlike in London I did not visit a watch museum. Honestly I did not even look if Dinant had a fragrance or a leather item shop. I am yet to travel to Belgium’s only watch-themed museum. Thus the main attraction for me in Dinant was to show my wonderful wife the Citadel. I’ve been telling her about it ever since we moved to Belgium; therefore, I had to finally show her why it is so impressive. After all how many fortifications on a cliff face do you know that are accessible to visitors?
It would be polite to ask whether in the end my wife was impressed. The short answer is – yes(-ish). She liked the city in general, but was it worth traveling for 90 minutes by train to have a leg workout while walking up the stairs (408-step staircase) to the Citadel? Maybe. But please don’t misinterpret this. The city is a magnificent example of walkable history. It is small in size, it is authentic in its vibe, it is welcoming to tourists. See for yourself below. One can be forgiven of wanting to see something more and to spend more time in this wonderful place. Maybe those of us wanting more are just greedy.

I, on the other hand, like it immensely and I liked to travel for 90 minutes via train to see Dinant from above. Note that this is coming from a person who generally is a fan of big rather than small cities. This was my second time. For me the highlight of this trip was our lunch on the shore of the river Meuse. We found a beer bar. Each of us ordered a Trappist beer and we took a snack plate to share. The cheese… The meat… And everything else was simply sublime. Well worth the visit. On a sunny day I would also recommend to have a boat trip on the river Meuse. I took it the first time I was there.

Anyway, I don’t have much else to say about our trip to Dinant. You can see in our pictures that the city is truly beautiful. I highly recommend a visit.
On a side note. I did buy one deck of cards. The museum of the Citadel had one in its souvenir shop. Also, it was nice to see playing cards displayed in one of Citadel’s presentations.

Olaaf
