An interesting title, right? Well, this is not going to be about my adventures between the sheets, but about my “passion” for champagne aka the elixir of Gods aka the drink of pleasure seekers aka the gem of France aka the most beautiful of all bubbles aka the taste of heavens, call it as you’d like.
Let’s be honest for a moment. I don’t have a vast experience with champagne. My first was only two to three years ago at a wine-tasting event. After that and while living in Latvia it was hard to come by a bottle of good champagne. In Latvia, you mostly have Crémant or Prosecco, and the champagne that you do have is mostly Moët. Unfortunately. Even though I have not yet tried any Moët makings.
I have had better, in my very humble opinion.
In these three months living in Brussels, I have drank and tasted more champagne varieties than in the previous years combined. And all thanks to my proximity (apart from other things) to great sources of this pleasure juice.
However, it is still not enough. Yes, one is to taste various labels, but something completely different is to be able to express yourself about this beautiful beverage. Sadly, I did not have much material to read about champagne in Latvia, because there are only one or two magazines that regularly print articles related to wine, and only recently there has been a book published by a well-known wine specialist who discusses in detail the interesting and the amazing details of this bubbly liquid.
This is the book “Vīns un Nords” (Wine and Nord) by Aigars Nords:

Sadly it is not translated into any other language, and it has been sold out in Latvia. So you either learn Latvian or ask someone in Latvia to translate it into English. It would very well be worth your while.
As of this moment, I have not yet been to any vineyards. So it is no surprise that I have not yet visited Champagne itself. But I really want to and probably I will do just that sometime next year. That is a goal of mine for 2023 which I am very keen to fulfil.
I have made pictures of the various champagne bottles I have drunk but only when coming to Brussels I started to collect cork caps of different varieties that I have tasted. Below you can see which ones I have tasted (or drunk, call it as you’d like) starting from September 2022.

Fancy going to Champagne? I would most definitely like to participate in a wine harvest as well.
Kind regards,
Olaaf
P.S. I know. I have to learn to write about wine. It is a hard thing to learn, I am the first to admit it. My hats off to the people who do it on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. Would like to better myself, and hopefully with practice the quality will come.
